Vol.47 Harmonizing with the will of the universe

Mr. Kazuo Inamori (Founder of Kyocera and KDDI, Honorary Chairman of JAL) states that the purpose of life is to strive to purify our mind and make the mind good.

Mr. Inamori has repeatedly stressed the importance of the mind in many of his books. I am convinced from my own experience that it is very important to make your mind good if you would like to grow your business. As they say, “A company can never be bigger than its top management’s capability”. In fact, the personality of the top management is largely reflected in the company’s performance. In other words, it is far more beneficial from a long-term perspective to polish one’s own personality than to learn petty management techniques. This is a profound lesson, and some people may be skeptical about it, but based on my eight years of experience in the United States, I believe it is a universal lesson that can be applied to countries other than Japan and the US.

In 2011, I suddenly had to leave the large Japanese brokerage firm where I had worked for 15 years. At the time, I was working in the San Francisco office, but the firm was restructuring the employees after the Lehman Brothers collapse. I liked San Francisco so much that I decided to start a business here because I wanted to live here longer. After developing my idea, I decided to open a sushi restaurant in San Francisco in hope the business would allow me to use my strengths as a Japanese. I was a complete novice when it came to the restaurant business, and although I managed to open a restaurant, I had a constant struggle from the start. On top of that, as the business grew, I ran into new difficulties.

About five years after I started my business, a friend of mine introduced me to Seiwajyuku in Silicon Valley, a study group for business owners run by Mr. Kazuo Inamori. It was there that I first began to learn about management. I was introduced to this book at that time, and since then, this book has been my guiding principle in management and in life. I would like to examine about 80 teachings of Kazuo Inamori in this book by comparing them to my own experiences. It would be my great pleasure if this book could be of some help to readers who are interested in business.
