Vol.33 Follow the principle of double check

Mr. Kazuo Inamori (Founder of Kyocera and KDDI, Honorary Chairman of JAL) is saying that people may turn dishonest and cheat without intention. Especially when handling money and managing valuable goods, it is important to double check thoroughly and establish a system to prevent mistakes and fraud. This can prevent people from making sin. As a restaurant owner, I’ve always worked with employees in good faith. However, it was happening almost every week that the cash sales accounts did not match. The reason was unclear because multiple people dealt with cash, and even when a cashier changed, there was no time to count cash in the middle of the day. Different employees were in charge of the cash register in the morning and afternoon, and when that person went to the bathroom or break, another employee covered the cash register. I considered stopping the handling of cash to avoid troubles, but I decided to put it off to keep our customer service level.

After all, I decided to let a reliable manager, who worked for a long time, handle the cash, and sometimes the bills did not fit, but I treated it as a mistake of the company as a miscellaneous expense. On average, the amount of discrepancy per day was less than $10.00. I thought less than $10.00 was more economically than spending more equivalent time on counting money with two people. My method is debatable, but I’d like you to refer to it as an example of daily cash handling in the United States.

At the end of the shift, the cashier in charge of the morning tried to let the person count the cash, but it was inefficient because it took time and mistakes were made in the counting. If a person other than the cashier is asked to do the cash check by himself or herself in order to make a double check, it may not work because there is a risk that that person may commit fraud. Although I have a surveillance camera, I have never looked back at the recorded data, so it would be delicate whether it would be a deterrent. For double-checking, you should also have two people do the cash accounting, but it doesn’t work when you’re busy.
